What we do

What Sumrex does, and what you do

Sumrex keeps your records and prepares your figures. You file them. This page says where that line is, in one place, so you can see it before you sign up rather than discover it afterwards.

1. Sumrex keeps the records

Everything below lives in your account and stays there. It is yours: you can export it, and you can take it with you if you leave.

  • Invoices and quotes. What you sent, what was paid, and what is still outstanding.
  • Expenses and receipts. Categorised, with the receipt attached to the payment it belongs to.
  • Mileage. Journeys and the rate that applies to them.
  • CIS. Statements from your contractors, and the deductions they took.
  • Documents. Contracts, registrations and the evidence behind them, in one place.

2. Sumrex prepares the figures

The records add up to the numbers you need at the point you need them. Each figure shows the records behind it, so you can check it rather than take it on trust.

  • Year-end figures. Turnover, allowable expenses and the totals that go on a Self Assessment return, with the box each one belongs to.
  • MTD quarterly totals. The income and expense totals for each quarterly update, taken from the same records.
  • A tax estimate. An estimate, so you can set money aside — it says what it does not account for, on its face.

3. You file, under your own Government Gateway

Where a figure has to reach HM Revenue & Customs, it goes there from you. Sumrex prepares it and shows you what it is made of; the submission is made in your name, with your own Government Gateway sign-in.

Household payroll (timesheets, pay runs and payslips for somebody you employ) is closed while a professional opinion on it is awaited.

4. What Sumrex does not do

These are the boundaries of the product rather than warnings about your situation. They are here because knowing where a tool stops is part of deciding whether it suits you.

  • Sumrex is not your tax agent. It does not file to HMRC on your behalf and it is not authorised as an agent. Your return is submitted by you, under your own Government Gateway.
  • Sumrex never holds your money. Payments happen bank-to-bank, between you and the person paying or being paid. Sumrex is not a payment institution and holds no client money.
  • Sumrex is not a law firm or an accountancy practice. Documents are prepared from your own answers, and each one says so on its face. Where a question needs professional judgement, the product says so rather than answering it.
  • Sumrex does not find you work. It is the admin layer for arrangements you already have. There is no matching, no ranking and no directory of people.

5. If something is not right

A document you generated can be generated again with different answers, as many times as you like — nothing is fixed once it is made. Within 14 days of subscribing, one button on your billing page cancels and refunds everything you paid. After that, cancelling stops renewal and you keep what you have paid for until the period you paid for ends; there is no refund for the rest of that period.

If something still is not right, make a complaint in your account (Settings, then Complaints). It is logged straight away, you are emailed an acknowledgement, and you are given the date we will reply by. You can also email us — the legal and company page has the address, along with our registered particulars.

6. Where to read more

How it works walks through the product itself. Pricing sets out what each step costs. The terms of sale and use are the contract, and they say the same thing this page does in the language a contract needs.
